Seasonal Shifts in the Morphological Traits of Bloom-Forming Cyanobacteria in Lake Chaohu, China

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophic water bodies pose a major threat to the environment and human health. The morphological functional traits of cyanobacteria play important roles maintaining their competitive advantages. To explore regulatory mechanisms different bloom-forming cyanobacteria, we performed one-year-long phytoplankton survey from November 2016 October 2017 Lake Chaohu, China. colony size cell diameter dominant were measured, relationships analyzed. results showed that Dolichospermum flos-aquae Microcystis aeruginosa lake. was species during summer; growth surpassed Microcystis, became late autumn, winter spring. From spring, decreased 222.25 μm 10.51 μm, individual increased 6.5 7.4 μm. summer enlarged sizes reduced diameters. 83.71 spring 196.71 while cells remained essentially at 3–4 March Chaohu. relationship between significantly positive, not significant. These suggest may maintain biomass through trade-off size, flexible mechanism exists. This study seeks improve our understanding how dominance by regulating traits.
